Tooth Extraction Aftercare Instructions

Please find outlined below a summary of our Tooth Extraction Aftercare Instructions.

Anaesthetised tissues:

Your lips/tongue will be numb for a couple of hours, take care not to bite your lip or burn them with hot drinks.

Prevent Bleeding:

• Do not rub your tongue over the socket area
• Avoid hot food or drinks.
• Avoid exercise or bending over.
• Avoid alcohol/smoking as these will slow the healing process.
• Avoid rinsing your mouth for several hours. You can drink water or luke warm tea / coffee (but not too hot)

Control Bleeding:

• Sit upright and sleep with your head on an extra pillow.
  (tip: place a towel over your pillow to protect the pillow until full clotting takes place)
• Apply pressure with a gauze pillow for 30 minutes – up to 3 times, as instructed.
• Stay Calm; contact the surgery should the bleeding persist.

Promote healing:

• Rinse your mouth with warm salty water gently, starting the day after tooth extraction, every 4-6 hours, for 5-7 days.
• Brush your teeth gently.
• Maintain a soft diet for about 2 days.
• If after 2-3 days after the extraction, pain, bleeding, or swelling increases or you develop a fever, please contact our surgery.

Miscellaneous:

• Finish entire course of antibiotics if prescribed. Follow analgesic recommendations given by your Dentist.
• Dissolvable sutures will last 10-14 days.
